We serve as Medical Corps Officers and biochemists/toxicologists in a wide diversity of assignments:
- Research biochemists at the Naval Medical Research Institute (NMRI), Bethesda, MD,the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute, Bethesda, MD, National Naval Dental Center, Bethesda, MD, NMRI/Toxicology Detachment, Wright Patterson AFB, OH, and the Naval Research Laboratory, Washington, DC.
- Forensic toxicologists/Drug Testing Program management at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, Rockville, MD, and the Navy Drug Screening Laboratories, Great Lakes, IL, Jacksonville, FL, and San Diego, CA.
- Drug Testing Program management at the Pentagon, Washington, DC and the Navy and Marine Corps Public Health Center, Norfolk, VA.
- Clinical chemistry at the National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, MD.
- Instructors/associate department chairman at the United States Naval Academy, Department of Chemistry, Annapolis, MD.
- Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Environmental (CBRE) Training Team, fleet toxicology support at the Navy Environmental and Preventive Medicine Unit No. 5, San Diego, CA.

CDR Marilyn R. Past was born in Grand Forks, North Dakota. She graduated from Creighton University, Omaha, Nebraska in 1977 with a B.S. in biology. She earned a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Nebraska Medical Center's School of Medicine and received her commission as a Lieutenant in the Medical Service Corps in December 1982. Following completion of Officer Indoctrination School in Newport, Rhode Island, she reported to the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute (AFRRI), Bethesda, Maryland for duty as a Research Biochemist/Principal Investigator in February 1983. While at AFRRI, she also served as an instructor in the AFRRI Medical Effects of Nuclear Weapons course.
In August 1985, she was transferred to the Navy Drug Screening Laboratory, Great Lakes, Illinois where she served as the Assistant Technical Director until June 1989. In 1989, she was recognized as a certified forensic drug screening laboratory inspector through completion of the National Laboratory Certification Program Drug Laboratory Inspectors course sponsored by the National Institute on Drug Abuse. From July 1989 -October 1991, she served as Executive Officer/Technical Director of the Navy Drug Screening Laboratory, Norfolk, Virginia. In October 1991, she received additional duty orders as Commanding Officer of the Navy Drug Screening Laboratory, Norfolk. In July 1994, she became the Commanding Officer, Navy Drug Screening Laboratory, Jacksonville, Florida. In October 1995, she became the Program Manager of the Navy Drug Testing Program, Navy and Marine Corps Public Health Center, Norfolk, Virginia. In February 1996, she assumed additional duties as the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery Specialty Leader for Biochemistry/Toxicology.
CDR Past is a member of the American Chemical Society, the American Association for Clinical Chemistry, Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society, and The Society of Forensic Toxicologists.
Her military decorations and awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal, the Joint Service Achievement Medal, the Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards), the Joint Meritorious Unit Award, the National Defense Service Medal and the Rifleman ribbon (sharpshooter).
