ShipShape - Frequently Asked Questions

Healthy Living

Q: Who can sign up to participate in ShipShape?

A: Active duty members that fail or who are at risk of failing their Body Composition Assessment (BCA). Family members and retirees should also be allowed to participate in the program.

Q: How long is the ShipShape program?

A: The program consists of weekly group sessions, lasting 1-2 hours each. Most programs are 8 weeks, but some are slightly longer. Following the group sessions, there is follow up between the instructor and each participant on at least a monthly basis for the following six months in order to continue weight loss and avoid "slips".

Q: Where is ShipShape offered and at what times?

A: Every MTF should schedule their ShipShape programs to meet the needs of their participants. Contact your local MTF or look online at the ShipShape homepage for contact information at various locations that offer ShipShape.

Q: I've heard everything about weight loss, so what make ShipShape special?

A: The ShipShape program has included much of the best and most current materials (tools) to assist participants. The program is led by coaches who work with participants to help design individualized action plans that address the major components of nutrition, physical activity, psychological preparedness, and application of concepts into daily living.

Q: How successful are people that go through the ShipShape program?

A: Half the military members that complete ShipShape have gotten back into Navy body composition standards. Many participants have lost a considerable amount of weight and kept it off long-term.

Q: If I can't attend ShipShape, are there any alternatives?

A: Military One Source offers a free Coaching for Healthy Weight program for active and reserve component members and their families that is similar to ShipShape. Some healthcare professionals make themselves available to provide one-on-one counseling. However, the amount of time required to adequately support an individual for weight loss often makes this approach unavailable. Of course there are many commercial programs or programs provided by civilian hospitals.
