ShipShape instructors are needed to conduct a standardized 8-week program that provides information, motivation, guidance, and group support for service members and other beneficiaries to lose and maintain weight loss through healthy lifestyle modifications based on good nutrition and physical activity.
Qualifications
Applicants for this training should be role models for healthy nutrition and physical activity. They may possess academic training in areas such as nutrition, physical activity, or counseling. However, formal training is not a requirement as long as the applicant follows the information provided in the curriculum. Applicants can include various clinical healthcare providers, health educators, command fitness leaders, or even lay persons who possess basic knowledge on nutrition and physical activity. The instructor training will review the comprehensiveresources provided to each instructor.
Very importantly, applicants should also feel comfortable interacting with individuals and groups in the role of a counselor or coach. The role of ShipShape facilitators is not to lecture participants; rather, it is to provide basic information about nutrition, physical activity, and behavior change strategies; to lead the group in class discussions and group exercises,; and to assist participants in identifying specific strategies they can use in their weight loss plans. As such, a successful ShipShape facilitator must be able to engage and motivate individuals.
Note: Please be aware that individuals who complete this training are expected to conduct group classes at least twice a year and complete all administrative responsibilities associated with the program.
Training Sessions
ShipShape Facilitator Training is a full one-day orientation that includes a written exam at the conclusion. There will be no physical activity by the participants as part of the training. Dress will be duty uniform or casual dress civilian attire.
- Training will be conducted annually at the annual Military Public Health Conference. Information is posted about the conference on the NMCPHC website under Annual Public Health Conference.
- Training will be conducted at the NMCPHC Health Promotion and Wellness Courses ShipShape Instructor Training will be provided for participants attending the entire week-long health promotion course as well as for participants who only wish to attend the ShipShape training.
- Training can also be coordinated through your regional medical command in order to train multiple instructors in your area. This training can be conducted by NMCPHC at the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth or at a site in your region. Call (757) 953-0962 to discuss special regional facilitator training.
- Training will also be conducted at the Navy Environmental and Preventive Medicine Units, at times in conjunction with the Health Promotion and Wellness Courses (see above for dates and registration).
