The Navy Entomology Center of Excellence, Jacksonville, FL (NECE JAX) is an echelon five command under the Navy and Marine Corps Public Health Center, Portsmouth, VA. Since its inception in 1949 as Malaria and Mosquito Control Unit Number 1, NECE JAX has helped ensure the readiness of our military forces by providing technical services and expert training in reducing the risk of diseases transmitted by insects and other arthropods.
NECE JAX supports the Global War on Terror by supplying Medical Entomologists and Preventive Medicine Technicians for Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. NECE JAX also participates in disaster relief operations such as Operation Unified Assistance in the Philippines, Bangladesh, Indonesia and East Timor to minimize the risk of vector-borne disease to U.S. personnel as well as to those impacted civilian populations. NECE JAX participates in important Humanitarian Assistance (HA) missions and is currently involved in the President's Malaria Initiative, a program to reduce deaths caused by malaria in Sub-Saharan African countries such as Malawi.
NECE JAX also provides direct support to the fleet by conducting shipboard and shore station (CONUS and OCONUS) technical assistance visits in support of those commands' disease vector and pest management programs. We focus on disease risk to military personnel and dependents and design comprehensive integrated pest management programs that reduce the risk of Malaria, Dengue, Lyme Disease, West Nile Virus and other arthropod-borne diseases.
NECE JAX is a center of excellence for pesticide application technology and tests and evaluates new commercial and experimental products for their efficacy and military relevance for use by the Department of Defense. NECE JAX has established collaborations with civilian and government agencies, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the USDA ARS laboratories in Gainesville, FL and College Station, TX. NECE is seeking to become a World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Center for Application Technology.
NECE JAX has an extensive training program that includes pest management training in Public Health Pest Control and Operational Entomology Training (OET). The OET course prepares preventive medicine personnel to establish temporary vector and pest management programs under austere conditions. Additionally, NECE JAX provides medical entomology information and vector-borne disease risk guidance to deploying personnel and their commands. We stand ready to provide support anywhere, any time.
