Background:
Injuries are one of leading causes of lost time and medical costs for the military. The EpiData Center focuses on military training and physical fitness injuries and injuries due to exposure to occupational hazards. In collaboration with the Naval Safety Center, medical information is merged with mishap information to provide a comprehensive picture of the root causes and impacts on mishaps that result in injury. In collaboration with the Marine Corps, the EpiData Center analyzes injury data collected by certified athletic trainers at the Marine Corps training sites as part of the Sports Medicine Injury Prevention Program (SMIP)[hotlink to SMIP webpage]. The SMIP analysis breaks down the injury by body part, nature of the injury, and severity and links it to a specific event. The EpiData Center is the Navy and Marine Corps representative on the Tri-service Military Injury Prevention Program Work Group, hosted by the Office of the Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs.
