CAPT Farr, Executive Officer

CAPTAIN R. Wesley Farr is a graduate of the West Virginia University with a B.A. in Biology in 1975. He received his Navy commission through the Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship in 1974. A graduate of the West Virginia University School of Medicine with a M.D. in 1978, he was designated a Naval Flight Surgeon in 1979.
CAPTAIN Farr served as a squadron Flight Surgeon with VMFA 212, VMFA 232, and VMFA 235 of the First Marine Air Wing in Iwakuni, Japan from 1980-1. He reported to VP 22 in Barbers Point, Hawaii, in 1981. During his tour, VP 22 received the Meritorious Unit Commendation. He reported to Branch Clinic Quantico as a Flight Surgeon in 1983.
CAPTAIN Farr transferred to the Reserves in June 1984. He completed an Internal Medicine Residency at WVU in 1986 and affiliated with Naval Hospital Bethesda Det 2106, NRTC Cumberland, Maryland, during his residency.
CAPTAIN Farr completed an Infectious Diseases Fellowship at the University of Colorado in 1990. He affiliated with Commander Amphibious Squadron Five at NRTC Denver, Colorado, during his fellowship.
CAPTAIN Farr transferred to the Individual Ready Reserve in 1990 when he accepted a faculty position in Infectious Diseases at the WVU School of Medicine. He was promoted to Associate Professor of Medicine and granted tenure in 1996. He was named Director of the International Health Program and Director of the Clinical Tropical Medicine and Parasitology Course at WVU in 1997. He received his Masters in Public Health degree from WVU in 2000.
CAPTAIN Farr returned to active duty in June 2000 to enter the Residency in Aerospace Medicine at Naval Aerospace Medical Institute, NAS Pensacola, Florida. He served as Chief Resident from 2001-2.
CAPTAIN Farr reported to the USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) in July 2002, as Senior Medical Officer and Carrier Group TWO Surgeon. He participated in Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom during a deployment to the Mediterranean Sea from December 2002 to May 2003. He deployed to the Mediterranean Sea and participated in Summer Pulse in July 2004. The Truman Medical Department received two consecutive COMNAVAIRFOR Blue M Awards in 2002 and 2003. He received two consecutive COMNAVAIRFOR Battle "E" Efficiency Awards in 2003 and 2004, the 2003 COMFLTFORCOM Battenberg Cup Award, the Navy Unit Commendation Award, and the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT) Expeditionary Medal.
CAPTAIN Farr reported to Naval Medical Education and Training Command in August 2004 to become Department Head of Military Tropical Medicine. He transferred to the Internal Medicine Department at NAVAL HOSPITAL PENSACOLA in October 2006 where he was Chair of the Pandemic Influenza Working Group. From 2007 to 2009, he was the Director of Public Health and Public Health Emergency Officer. He deployed as an Individual Augmentee with the Hospital Mentor Team to the ANA Regional Hospital in Mazar-e Sharif, Afghanistan from August 2007 to August 2008. He reported to the Internal Medicine Department at the Naval Aerospace Medical Institute in August 2009.
CAPTAIN Farr is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases by the American Board of Internal Medicine. The American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene certifies him in Clinical Tropical Medicine and Traveler's Health. He is also Board Certified in Aerospace Medicine by the American Board of Preventive Medicine. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and a Fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America.
He currently holds an appointment as Associate Professor, Departments of Medicine and Preventive Medicine and Biostatistics, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. He is author or co-author of 30 journal articles, two book chapters, and 18 published abstracts.
CAPTAIN Farr's personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (four awards) and the Meritorious Service Medal (three awards). He received his Surface Warfare Medical Department Officer qualification in 2004.
